Epson Stylus Pro Inkjet Proofers
This line of proofers caused a sensation when introduced to the prepress world in the late 1990s, essentially putting Iris Graphics and other hi-end proofing companies out of business. At last, it was possible to get color-calibrated proofs using the same inkheads as used by the mass consumer.
The first line in this series, the tabloid 5000, the mid-range 7000 and the wide-format 9000 used six different ink cartridges. Next came the seven-cartridge 5500, 7500, 7600,9500,9600. Lastly, the latest models use eight cartridges (7800,9800).
The earliest models came with a lousy Fiery hardware RIP that was scorned by almost everybody. EFI later bought Best Color which made a excellent software RIPs for the Epson line. So if you buy one of these fine proofers, be sure to try to shop around for a software RIP, there are many of them around.
While you are here, why don't you check out the price of ink cartridges for the Stylus Pro series as well, there might be a good deal here and there.
