Google has many interesting tools in their labs and one of the most fun to play with would the Google Trends tool. So I popped in the keyword printing and got these results back:
For USA: the regions that show most activity with the keyword "printing" are:
Minnesota, United States
Wisconsin, United States
Utah, United States
Indiana, United States
Georgia, United States
Tennessee, United States
Illinois, United States
Oregon, United States
Michigan, United States
The cities that show the most activity are:
Cambridge, MA, USA
Minneapolis, MN, USA
Austin, TX, USA
Cincinnati, OH, USA
Rochester, NY, USA
Indianapolis, IN, USA
Atlanta, GA, USA
Salt Lake City, UT, USA
Portland, OR, USA
If you look at the trend of printing on an international scale, it's even more interesting:
Regions of the world with activity using keyword printing:
South Africa
Australia
India
Singapore
New Zealand
Philippines
Ireland
United States
United Kingdom
So that's a bit of a head-scratcher for me, I mean South Africa? I didn't know there were printing hotspots in South Africa. And the Kiwis are ranked up high too.
City rankings:
Chennai, India
Melbourne, Australia
Minneapolis, MN, USA
Sydney, Australia
Mumbai, India
Brisbane, Australia
Singapore, Singapore
Atlanta, GA, USA
Delhi, India
Chennai, India? Never even heard of Chennai, India, which shows you how ignorant I can be. And boy those Aussies really do like to talk about printing.
Now, everybody knows that the Chinese are really getting big into printing, but obviously not into using the English language to talk about it.

Chennai makes sense. It is home to a lot of businesses that take the outsourced desktop publishing jobs from big publishing companies nowadays.
Woo!! Aussies almost number one!!
Pity there’s so much fire down here to talk about or we would be higher up the ladder.
Dennis.
Hi DJ Dunkerley ,
I have been following your blog for long time. Infact,if you remember about the article on drum scanner (who is using, I had replied that we are a prepress company from Chennai India still using Dainippon 8060P drum scanner). It is a beautiful scanner giving you wonderful separation at 12000 dpi. Chennai is fast becoming Detroit of US. With so many multinational companies coming in here there is a big need for quality printing.
Chennai is the hub for Outsourcing of prepress, publishing and printing . There are almost one hundred e publishing houses and fast coming behined it is prepress.
