So What is a Ferrite Bead?

by admin on September 23, 2008

Do you know what it is? I didn't know either until today. The new okidata printer came in today and the packaging included a ferrite bead, which we hooked onto a standard cat-5 cable. In case you are too lazy to hit the link, a ferrite bead cuts down on electromagnetic interference.

I could have really used this when I was setting up a Prinergy system at an (unnamed) foreign location back in 2001. The EMI was off the scale (you can tell because the monitors go nuts) and the server literally couldn't activate it's license via the network.

If you've got EMI in the shop, I would pick some up.

I always wondered what the bumps on the monitor cables were for – I learned something today!!
