Prepress Workflow and the SERPs

by admin on July 6, 2009

Sometimes when I'm writing yet another catty post about some company in the prepress industry, I say to myself "Boy, why am I doing this? Do I ever want to work in this industry again? Why am I burning yet another bridge and alienating vendor X? Sure, it's amusing as hell and I chuckle endlessly for hours at my computer, but why can't I just torture kittens to satisfy my pleasure centers?"

Fortunately, I was curious one day to see if you know, prepress vendors had actually discovered, uh, the internet and Google search engine rankings. I will present the evidence to you, dear reader, and let you make up the conclusion (As for me, upon close examination of the matter at hand, I feel confident I can continue to torture kittens with impunity)

First up, Kodak and the keyword "Prinergy" which incidentally generates 8100 searches a month on Google, according to its keyword estimator.

So at first, I think to myself, "well done Kodak," as they occupy the #1 position for the prinergy keyword but then I click on the link:
kodak prinergy redirect1 Prepress Workflow and the SERPs
Note that it redirects to the Kodak home page, not the Prinergy 5.0 product page. That would have involved too much work.
Yoo-okay, enough of Kodak. Let's go beat up assess Agfa Apogee. I used the keyword term "Agogee workflow" (Google doesn't care whether you put the : in front or not).

Agfa has the #2 spot which I guess is fine but again, you click on the page and its a testimonial to the Xcalibur CtP, with Apogee as a mere honourable mention. So let's say I'm customer interested in you know, buying an Apogee system or even just reading more about Apogee. What do I click on? Nothing.

Anyways, I guess the winner in this competition would be Agfa, because at least the link has useful information on it. But for pity's sake, do you think either of you guys could do a minimum amount of SEO and make your product pages appear on the first page of Google? I really don't think Google would mind.

Anyways, last test, keyword phrase "prepress workflow":

prepress workflow 1 keyword1 Prepress Workflow and the SERPs
and

prepress workflow 2 keyword Prepress Workflow and the SERPs

Interesting, both Heidelberg and AGFA have listings at the bottom of page one. No Kodak, no Prinergy.
