If RR Donnelly acquires Quebecor

by admin on May 21, 2009

In case you missed it, RR Donnelly is offering $1.3 billion for Quebecor. Now back in the late 1990s, the big commercial printers in North America were as follows (at least in terms of buying CTP equipment):

1. RR Donnolly

2. Quebecor

3. World Color

4. Quad Graphics

Now in case you missed the obvious, 1,2,3 may soon be one. It is possible that antitrust may get in the way of the acquisition, but it is also possible that I may spontaneously grow wings out of my back because of a random chromosome mutation  and immediately fly away. I would say both have the same likelihood of happening.

Of course, the commercial rotogravure marketplace will be limited to two vendors as well, with the barriers to entry quite high. You've got to be thinking that the rotogravure business of Quebecor is one of the main, if the main, jewel that RRD wants to add to their treasure chest.

Secondly, I just don't know who Kodak is going to sell their inkjet presses to. HP is locking down the middle market with their Indigos, and RRD is doing their own thing with inkjet.

Wow, reading the comments on the original article, I had no idea there was such a strong anti-American sentiment up North. I hope that view isn’t applied to the general population of the U.S. There aren’t a lot of Americans terribly thrilled with our Big Business right now either.
