First vacation in about 4 years…

by admin on July 24, 2008

... I think, anyways.  I don't think I have a real one since I left Creo back in 2004. For some strange reason, once you start working for yourself, vacations lose much of their allure. I mean, it's not like I'm getting away from the boss, right?

Ten days with the Grandparents in my hometown of Ottawa. It's my Dad's 70th birthday and my 40th, so the relatives are coming from all over for the party. Right now I'm hiding in Dad's den in the basement and the kids are raising havoc upstairs.

Gotta look up my high school buddy while I am here. By the way, here's a little story about how the choice you make as a teenager define your career path: In university I took a reasonably hard program and sweated it out for 4 years. Out of 213 people in my first year, 75 graduated. Then I went into prepress tech for 15+ years now. My buddy drank his way through university and went into the printing business too, funny enough. But he went into... sales. (You guessed that, didn't you?)

Of course, I won't tell you who makes more money. But my buddy's house has a swimming pool (in Ottawa!) and a fish pond and a bridge that goes over the frickin' fish pond so you gotta wonder who made the better career choice.

Yeah, but the good ol’ days of big sales in the early to mid nineties are over. I wonder how well he has been doing lately. It seems that the vendors are having to work harder then ever.
